Retiree's News

John Roberts

John has been in Scott and White Hospital since Wednesday. He has been diagnosed with colon and liver cancer. They will be doing a biopsy tomorrow to determine what kind of cells we are dealing with, what the prognosis is and what treatment we might persue. His liver is so enlarged that it its constricting his heart, lungs and stomach. He is only able to eat a few bites of food now and then thru the day. Our daughter, son-in-law and son are coming up tomorrow. Our prayer is that the biopsy will go as planned tomorrow and that our children will have a safe trip on this busy Labor Day weekend.

Thank you for your prayers,

Elsa

 Update:  September 2, 2012

The oncologists came yesterday, The cancer is inoperable and untreatable so his condition is terminal. They did offer him a new chemo pill that might extend his life by a few months. Given the side effects involved he said he didn't want to do that. They wanted him to take another day to think about it and will be back this afternoon for his final answer. He will be discharged to hospice and will be able to come home probably Tuesday. They will keep him comfortable and monitor the progression so he will be able to spend time with friends and family. I am okay. I don't think this has completely registered in our thinking yet. We so appreciate your prayers. John is mostly concerned for me. I told him last night that he should discharge me into the Lords hands who as he knows is fully trustworthy and able and that I am doing the same with him. I know this will getter more difficult as we go along but we have some strong arms to lean on. Since I have a limited email list since we left Midland please feel free to forward this to other mutual friends that would want to know. I love all of you and appreciate all the things we have shared together. Last night we began to reflect on all the good things in our lives and how very blessed we are. Pam and Anthony went home last night and are safely home again. Johnny will leave today so please lift him up to the Lord today as he negotiates I 35 back to Carrollton today.

Update: September 5, 2012

Hospice came today so all the paper work is completed. They will be back Thursday with oxygen and his comfort care box (all the meds he might need). They are going to try to ease his breathing right away.

They also encouraged visits from any friends and family that might want to come. Sooner rather than later is the way they put it. So! If anyone wants to visit him I want to let you know that it will not be any inconvenience on us at all. If you choose to eat with us, the Meridian will take care of that and the food here is very good. I do not cook or clean. The staff here is extremely accommodating and we have any kind of help we may need. They even wash and fold all our linens. So we are completely free to just visit.

We are fully aware that many of our friends are unable to do this and this invitation is just information for you that would want to know in case you were considering it. Please know that we are not expecting anyone to come but we just wanted you to have this information. Thank you for your prayers and thoughts. We have already received cards from friends we have not had contact with for several years. We have so many good memories and have been spending a lot of time remembering how blessed our life has been.

I may not be able to personally answer all the encouraging emails we are receiving but I will read everyone of them to John. We love and appreciate everyone of you.

September 7, 2012: Update

Many of you have asked for specific prayer requests. This is John's wish:
Do not pray for healing. He said that he has been fighting his body for 40 years
now and he is tired spiritually, mentally and physically. His words are "my house is in order and I'm ready to go". His concern is for us, his immediate family.

He asks that we pray that he will have an easy journey home and that he will not linger and get to such a point that it causes further distress and concern for us. We have agreed with him and have committed him into the arms of our loving Father. His words were "It can't get any better than that". We see him running, leaping and praising God in the future, something he has been unable to do for years.

For us, his immediate family, pray that the Lord will help us with the difficult transitions we will all have to make. God is good and He is faithful.

Love,
Elsa
